“Give us this day our daily bread”.

We’ve all said it for years, reciting The Lord’s Prayer.

These few words seem so simple, yet so powerful.

I’ve been focused on this verse lately. Because the ‘daily’ part gets me.

I have some very exciting things happening in the next few months that I seriously cannot wait for!  And, I also have been on my knees praying hard prayers so that I (and others) will see how God will work in this season.

Like many of you, I like to plan for tomorrow.  I want to know what next month will look like.  I want to know what the future holds for me and my loved ones.

But the in this prayer that Jesus teaches us, He specifically states, “our daily bread.”

Not bread for tomorrow.

Or next week.

Or in the coming years.

Bread for today.

Scripture assures us that our daily bread is enough…

that God wants us to depend on him to give us what we need, when we need it.

He wants us to know He walks with us always.

He wants us to believe He works all things for our good.

He wants us to let Him carry the weight of our worries.

“The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.” Deuteronomy 31:8 (NIV)

“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”  Matthew 6:34

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” Philippians 4:6 (NIV)

If we are not careful, the enemy will enter our thoughts of doubt and lure us into believing that God is not with us, that He won’t provide for us, that He isn’t listening or even doesn’t care.  We are sometimes tempted to put more faith in ourselves or our situations because we are tired of waiting on God’s timing.  Because we want more than just bread for today.

So, I’ve been trying to lean more into God’s word and trying to learn to focus on my daily bread.

And, I am learning more and more each day….

I’m learning to be grateful for daily blessings.  I don’t have to stress over things that may or may not go my way.  For I trust that God will give me exactly what I need when I need it.

I’m learning to stop asking what’s next.  I don’t have to be anxious in the next chapter. For He has gone before me and is making a way that is good and full of His grace and His love.

I’m learning to be still and listen for His voice.  I don’t need to worry about the what-ifs. For I know that there is peace in His presence and His plans are always good.

I’m learning to be obedient and surrender to His purpose.  I don’t need to figure out a way to take of everything myself. For He has been faithful before and I know He will be faithful again.

I’m learning to pray that I am ready for what he has planned for me each day. I don’t want to miss the blessings he has for me.  For His love and His grace are everlasting.

He is giving me my daily bread.

And, I am learning that is exactly what I need.

How about you?

Is there something that worries you about tomorrow?

Do you find yourself tired of waiting and wanting to move without God’s direction?

Does the idea not knowing what the future holds make you uneasy?

If so, I encourage you to join me in focusing on our daily bread and watching Him work in our daily lives.

Get in His word.  Talk with Him; walk with Him.

He carries the weight of our worries when we depend on Him.

He offers freedom when we submit to Him.

He guides us into His goodness and fulfills our every need when we trust His ways.

He loves us so much and gives us hope in all things.

He gives us our daily bread.
